New Guidelines for Prostate Cancer Screening Spark Controversy

American Cancer Society against routine testing

About the Prostate

The prostate is a male gland located below the bladder. It makes some of the fluid (semen) that carries sperm when a man has sex. It surrounds the urethra, the tube that carries urine and semen through the penis and out of the body.

As a man gets older, his prostate gland usually gets larger (enlarges). An enlarged prostate can press on the urethra, making it difficult to pass urine. This enlargement, called benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), is not cancer.
