Functional Health Literacy

Previous studies have found that many patients are not receiving (easy to understand) oral or written instructions from their physicians and pharmacists on how to appropriately manage prescription medications. As a result, instructions on the prescription container label assume greater importance. The Institute of Medicine estimates that 90 million adults in the United States may have trouble understanding and acting on health information. Medication container labels, in particular, may be confusing and difficult to comprehend for many patients.
